My version of Word 2007 is from the US and I'm now in the UK. It won't let me use any templates for a new document and says it cannot connect to Microsoft Office Online. On top of which, when I go to Word's website for support it will let me click around but not start a new thread to ask other Word users. Is this because I'm using a US version in the UK? How can I get around this?

I doubt it has to do with what version of Word you're using so much as where you're using it. The website is probably checking your IP address and has determined it's outside the US.
Try to hook up with Microsoft in the UK instead.
